Case Study
Save the Redwoods League

Project Type

  • Visioning & Strategy
  • Meeting Facilitation
  • Grove Storymapping™

Key Tools

  • Graphic Guides®

We assisted the Save the Redwoods League in creating a visual five-year plan that was then revisited and updated five years later in a similar process. The oldest conservation organization in California, the League had created the state park systems to save old-growth redwoods, but faced complex challenges of acquiring new second-growth lands, changing constituents, and organization alignment. Using Graphic Guides® and other tools, our consultants facilitated the league staff, board, and council members in three one-day sessions spread over three months, helping them to successfully agree on a plan.

The vision and strategic gameplan that emerged from this process provided a clear and compelling framework for the League during the late 1990s. These documents were referenced in board meetings, committee meetings, and annual board and council meetings to chart the organization’s progress.

“The Grove facilitators and Storymaps™ allowed us to successfully communicate and align across a very complex organization, involving a huge and involved advisory council, board, staff and funders…”
