In 2007, AmericaSpeaks—an organization that brings people together in large town-hall settings to deliberate critical policy issues and connect the results to decision-makers—contacted us to design and produce materials to support its first meeting of the National Rural Assembly (NRA). The goal of this meeting was to help participants to understand the current state of rural America by assessing assets and challenges, to create a vision for rural America, and to devise national strategies and explore federal policies.
We designed and produced a Discussion Guide for this coalition-building meeting that contained not only context-setting information and graphics but also visual templates (similar to The Grove’s Graphic Guides® and The Personal Compass) to aid note-taking, discussion and group action. After the meeting, the Discussion Guide was made available to participants to download for use in facilitating discussions in their own communities.
